Highlights

Overview

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most legendary trekking routes in Nepal—and the world—offering a dynamic blend of cultural immersion, diverse landscapes, and dramatic mountain scenery. This incredible journey circles the Annapurna Massif, taking trekkers from lush subtropical forests and rice paddies to arid high mountain deserts and the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Stretching over 160–230 kilometers (100–145 miles) depending on the route variations, the trek traverses multiple climate zones and offers breathtaking views of Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Machapuchare (Fishtail).

Beginning typically in Besisahar and ending in Jomsom or further in Pokhara, the trail passes through charming villages, ancient monasteries, and high mountain passes. One of the most iconic sections of the trek is the crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters / 17,769 feet)—the highest point on the trail and a major highlight. The diversity of this trek is unmatched; trekkers experience Hindu culture in the lower elevations and Buddhist culture as they ascend. Whether you're soaking in hot springs in Tatopani, exploring the windswept village of Manang, or admiring the stark beauty of Muktinath, the Annapurna Circuit offers a rich, ever-changing landscape that captivates every step of the way.

Annapurna Circuit Trekking Difficulty
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is considered a moderately challenging to difficult trek, primarily due to its length, elevation gain, and the crossing of Thorong La Pass. The trail covers long daily distances (typically 6–8 hours of walking per day), and as you climb higher, the oxygen level decreases, which can affect stamina and increase the risk of altitude sickness. Proper acclimatization days are essential, particularly in areas like Manang, where trekkers usually take a rest day to adjust to the altitude.

Although no technical climbing skills are required, the trek demands a good level of physical fitness and mental preparation. The route is well-established and supported by numerous teahouses that provide meals and accommodations, making it logistically easier than many high-altitude treks. However, conditions at Thorong La Pass can be harsh—snow, wind, and sub-zero temperatures are common, even in peak seasons. With the right preparation, proper gear, and the guidance of an experienced company like Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, most trekkers in good health can complete the Annapurna Circuit successfully and safely.

Best Time for Annapurna Circuit Trek
The best time to trek the Annapurna Circuit is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. In spring, the valley bursts into vibrant colors as rhododendrons and other wildflowers bloom, adding spectacular splashes of red and pink to the landscape. The weather during this time is generally warm and stable, making it ideal for trekking. The air is clear, offering stunning panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Spring also coincides with the festival season, allowing trekkers to experience rich local cultural events.

Autumn is widely regarded as the best trekking season in Nepal due to the post-monsoon clear skies, dry trails, and mild temperatures. The monsoon rains wash away dust and pollution, leaving the air crisp and visibility excellent for photographing the towering peaks. The days are sunny and pleasant, and the nights cool but not overly cold, providing comfortable conditions for high-altitude trekking. Although winter treks (December to February) are possible, the cold temperatures and risk of snowstorms on Thorong La Pass make it less favorable for most trekkers. The monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended because of heavy rains, slippery trails, and potential landslides.

Major Highlights of Annapurna Circuit Trek
The Annapurna Circuit Trek offers an incredible range of highlights, both natural and cultural. One of the standout features is the Thorong La Pass, which, at 5,416 meters, is one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Crossing this pass is a thrilling achievement, rewarding trekkers with sweeping views of the surrounding Himalayan giants and a profound sense of accomplishment. The dramatic shift in landscapes—from lush subtropical forests and terraced fields to the stark, arid terrain of the Tibetan plateau—is itself a journey through diverse ecological zones.

Another highlight is the charming town of Manang, an essential acclimatization stop known for its hospitable teahouses, Tibetan Buddhist culture, and beautiful mountain scenery. Nearby, trekkers can explore serene Gangapurna Lake and the surrounding peaks. The trail also passes through Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, famous for its unique temple and holy springs. Along the way, travelers will encounter diverse communities—Thakali, Gurung, and Tibetan—each offering a rich cultural experience. The hot springs of Tatopani provide a relaxing stop, while the final descent into Pokhara offers a scenic end to the trek with views of serene lakes and lush valleys.
