Welcome to Nepal! Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by the Hidden Path Treks team and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. Take some time to relax and acclimatize to the altitude and the vibrant atmosphere of Nepal’s capital city. Your guide will provide a briefing about the trek, answer any questions, and help you prepare for the adventure ahead. Enjoy a restful evening or explore Thamel’s lively streets filled with shops, cafes, and cultural charm.
Start your day with a guided morning tour of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the ancient Durbar Square, the sacred Swayambhunath Stupa, and the bustling markets. After lunch, transfer to the domestic airport for a short flight to Nepalgunj, the gateway to western Nepal. In Nepalgunj, prepare for the next day’s early morning flight to Jhupal, the starting point of your trek. Overnight at a comfortable lodge, rest well, and get ready for the journey into the remote Dolpo region.
After an early morning flight from Nepalgunj to Jhupal, the trail begins immediately with a gentle hike. Trek through lush forests and traditional villages, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and warm hospitality of the locals. The path winds along streams and crosses wooden bridges, offering glimpses of traditional farm life and distant mountain views. Reach Chepkpa, a charming village nestled in a peaceful valley, where your camp or lodge awaits. Enjoy dinner and a chance to acclimatize as you prepare for the coming days of trekking.
Today’s trek continues through rich rhododendron forests and scattered farmland. You’ll pass through small villages where locals tend to barley and buckwheat fields, and encounter friendly children waving “Namaste.” The trail gradually ascends, revealing more expansive views of the surrounding mountains. Upon arrival in Chepkpa, enjoy a warm meal and the chance to explore this serene village. The peaceful environment, combined with the stunning mountain backdrop, makes for a perfect introduction to the Dolpo region’s natural and cultural beauty.
As you trek toward Samduwa, the landscape changes to high-altitude meadows dotted with wildflowers in the warmer months. The trail undulates, offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks. You’ll cross rivers and streams and encounter yaks grazing along the way. Samduwa village is small and traditional, where ancient Tibetan culture thrives in isolation. Spend the evening in a guesthouse or camp, sharing stories with your team and immersing yourself in the peaceful mountain atmosphere before continuing the trek.
Today you’ll arrive at the magnificent Phoksundo Lake, one of Nepal’s most spectacular high-altitude lakes. The trek involves descending steeply through forested slopes, crossing wooden bridges and passing waterfalls. The deep turquoise lake is sacred to locals and surrounded by cliffs and small settlements. Explore Ringmo village and nearby Tshowa Bon Monastery, known for its ancient murals and spiritual significance. Camp near the lake, enjoying the tranquil setting and the reflection of the surrounding snow peaks shimmering on the water’s surface.
A well-earned rest day allows you to explore the surroundings of Phoksundo Lake at leisure. Take a short hike to the old Tshowa Bon Monastery or wander around Ringmo village to experience local life and culture. This day provides time to acclimatize further and enjoy the stunning scenery, with opportunities to spot local wildlife such as blue sheep or Himalayan marmots. Relax by the lake’s edge, soak in the atmosphere, and prepare for the challenging days ahead on the trek.
Leaving Phoksundo, the trail climbs steadily through alpine meadows and rocky terrain toward Timche village. Along the way, you will witness breathtaking views of the snow-capped Kanjiroba mountain range. Timche is a small settlement that offers a taste of traditional Dolpo life, with stone houses and prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze. The altitude increase will be noticeable, so pace yourself carefully. This day readies you for crossing Baga-La Pass, the highest point on the trek, which lies just ahead.
Today is a challenging day as you ascend to the Baga-La Pass, the highest and most demanding section of the Lower Dolpo trek. The climb is steep and the air thin, but the panoramic views from the summit are breathtaking—snow-capped peaks and vast valleys stretch to the horizon. After a well-deserved rest at the pass, descend to Danigar village. The village offers basic lodging and a chance to interact with locals maintaining their traditional nomadic lifestyle. Camp under the wide Himalayan sky and rest up for tomorrow’s trek.
Today you will tackle the second high pass, Numa-La, ascending steadily through rocky terrain and loose scree. The pass is less traveled but equally spectacular, with magnificent views of surrounding peaks. After crossing the pass, descend into a high valley where your camp is set for the night. The remote location emphasizes the wilderness of this trek, offering solitude and pristine natural beauty. Enjoy the crisp mountain air, starlit skies, and the camaraderie of your trekking team after a strenuous day.
Descend into the picturesque Tarap Valley to Dho-Tarap village, a vibrant center of Tibetan culture and spiritual life. The village is known for its ancient monasteries, chortens, and traditional stone houses. Walking through its alleys, you’ll experience the harmony between local people and their environment. Visit monasteries and interact with monks, gaining insights into the Bonpo and Buddhist traditions that have flourished here for centuries. Relax in guesthouses or camp, savoring the welcoming atmosphere and unique cultural heritage.
The trail follows the Tarap River upstream through forested valleys and open fields, passing small hamlets and farms. Gyagar is a lively village with terraced fields and traditional stone homes. Here, you can witness daily life—farmers tending barley and buckwheat, herders managing yaks, and artisans crafting local goods. The longer trekking day offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and opportunities to appreciate the remote yet hospitable mountain communities.
You descend through mixed forest and farmland, passing Chyugar village, a charming settlement known for its scenic setting and welcoming locals. The route follows the Tarap Khola river, with occasional river crossings on wooden bridges. The trail becomes greener as you approach lower elevations, with rhododendrons and pine trees lining the path. Camp near the riverbank, enjoying peaceful sounds of flowing water and birdlife as you reflect on the diverse landscapes of Dolpo.
The trek continues descending into warmer valleys, passing through terraced agricultural land and traditional villages. Tarakot is a bustling mountain town with several guesthouses, shops, and temples. This stop offers a chance to relax, resupply, and interact with locals involved in farming and trade. Explore the village’s markets or visit nearby temples for a cultural experience. The temperate climate and greenery mark a pleasant contrast to the higher alpine regions previously trekked.
Your final trekking day descends to Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpa district. Dunai offers amenities such as shops, restaurants, and internet access—a refreshing change after days in remote wilderness. After a rest and refreshment, you’ll take a scenic two-hour drive to Jhupal, where the Hidden Path Treks team prepares your return flight. Celebrate the successful completion of your trek, share memories with your team, and rest before your departure.
Catch an early flight from Jhupal to Nepalgunj, then connect to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions will transfer you to your hotel in Thamel. Spend the afternoon at leisure—relax, shop, or enjoy a traditional Nepali meal. Reflect on your incredible journey through the Lower Dolpo region and enjoy the comforts of the city after weeks in remote terrain.
