Highlights

Overview

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour, offered by Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, is a rare and culturally rich journey to one of Nepal’s most mystical and restricted regions. Unlike traditional trekking, this tour is designed as an overland adventure using 4WD vehicles, making it accessible to a wider range of travelers. The route takes you through the ancient Kingdom of Lo, hidden in the trans-Himalayan region behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, offering a blend of raw, dramatic landscapes and preserved Tibetan-influenced culture. You'll pass through arid canyons, colorful cliffs, walled villages, and ancient monasteries, all while following the historic salt trade route to Tibet.

The tour reaches its pinnacle in Lo Manthang (3,730m), the ancient capital of Upper Mustang. Here, you’ll explore a timeless city surrounded by mud-brick walls and home to centuries-old Buddhist temples and royal palaces. This journey not only introduces travelers to a remote corner of Nepal rarely touched by modern development but also provides a deep immersion into the spiritual and cultural identity of Mustang. The overland format minimizes physical exertion, allowing more time for sightseeing, photography, and connecting with locals — a perfect blend of adventure and comfort.

Best Time for Upper Mustang Overland Tour
The best time to explore on the Upper Mustang Overland Tour is from late March to early November, with the peak seasons being spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is generally dry and clear, offering the best visibility of the unique desert-like landscapes and distant Himalayan peaks. These seasons also offer the most pleasant temperatures for exploring the high-altitude villages and ancient monasteries.

One of the exceptional aspects of Upper Mustang is its location in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, meaning that even during the monsoon months (July to August), the region remains largely dry and accessible. This makes it one of the few regions in Nepal where trekking and touring is still possible during the summer. Additionally, the annual Tiji Festival, held in Lo Manthang (usually in May), is a major cultural highlight that draws visitors from around the world to witness the sacred dances and rituals that celebrate the victory of good over evil.

Upper Mustang Overland Tour Difficulty
The Upper Mustang Overland Tour is considered moderate in terms of difficulty, largely due to its elevation rather than physical exertion. Since this is an overland tour, much of the travel is done by 4WD vehicle, significantly reducing the physical demands compared to trekking. However, travelers should still be prepared for long driving hours on rugged, off-road terrain that can be bumpy and dusty. The roads, while accessible, require patience and resilience, especially during the drive between Jomsom, Ghami, and Lo Manthang.

Altitude is another factor to consider. The tour takes you as high as 3,800 meters (12,464 feet) in Muktinath, and while the gradual ascent minimizes the risk of acute mountain sickness, some guests may still feel mild effects such as headache or fatigue. Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions ensures proper acclimatization and provides experienced guides to monitor your health and comfort. With basic preparation and an open mind, most travelers in good health will find this journey very rewarding and achievable.

Food and Accommodation on Upper Mustang Overland Tour
Accommodations during the Upper Mustang Overland Tour are typically in locally run teahouses and guesthouses, offering simple yet comfortable facilities. In places like Lo Manthang and Jomsom, you’ll find modest but cozy rooms with basic amenities like warm blankets, attached bathrooms (in some locations), and solar-heated showers. These lodges offer a welcoming atmosphere with traditional architecture and an authentic glimpse into Mustang’s way of life.

Food along the journey includes a mix of traditional Nepali meals, Tibetan-inspired dishes, and some Western options. Popular meals include dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), Tibetan bread, thukpa (noodle soup), momo (dumplings), and eggs/pancakes for breakfast. While choices are somewhat limited due to the remoteness of the region, Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions ensures that meals are hygienic, nourishing, and can accommodate dietary needs if requested in advance. Clean drinking water is also readily available, with bottled or boiled water provided daily.
