Highlights

Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek is a journey into one of Nepal’s most mysterious and culturally rich regions, often described as a “Forbidden Kingdom.” Located in the rain-shadow area of the Annapurna range, Upper Mustang is an ancient Tibetan Buddhist kingdom that remained isolated from the outside world until the 1990s. This trek offers a rare glimpse into a landscape that looks and feels like the Tibetan Plateau, with dramatic red rock cliffs, desert-like valleys, and traditional walled villages where centuries-old customs and rituals continue unchanged. The stark beauty and spiritual aura of Upper Mustang attract adventurers and culture seekers alike.

Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions offers expertly guided Upper Mustang Trek experiences that immerse you deeply into the unique heritage of this remarkable region. The trek typically begins with a scenic flight to Jomsom, followed by a journey through places like Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang, and Chhusang, Charang, Lo Manthang, and several other ancient villages. Lo Manthang, the walled capital of Mustang, stands as a living museum with its traditional Tibetan architecture, monasteries, and royal palaces. Along the way, trekkers explore caves carved into cliffs, ancient monasteries like Thubchen Gompa, and sacred shrines that reflect Mustang’s spiritual traditions.

Best Season for Upper Mustang Trek
The best seasons to trek in Upper Mustang are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is stable, skies are clear, and temperatures are moderate. These months provide excellent visibility of the towering Himalayan peaks and the rugged Mustang landscape. Spring is especially beautiful with blooming rhododendrons and vibrant alpine flora, while autumn offers crisp air and dry trails, ideal for long-distance trekking. Temperatures can still drop sharply at night, especially in higher elevations, so proper gear is essential.

At Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, we carefully plan the Upper Mustang Trek itineraries during these optimal seasons to maximize comfort, safety, and enjoyment. While the region’s dry climate allows some flexibility to trek in winter, travelers should be prepared for colder temperatures and limited services. Summer months are less popular due to occasional thunderstorms and dusty conditions. Our expert guides keep a close eye on weather forecasts and trail conditions to ensure a safe and smooth trekking experience in this remote and fragile environment.

Upper Mustang Trekking Difficulty
The Upper Mustang Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek, primarily due to its remote location, rugged terrain, and the high altitude, which can reach up to 3,850 meters in Lo Manthang and higher passes nearby. Although the elevation is not as extreme as some other Himalayan treks, trekkers must be prepared for long days on uneven trails, occasional windy conditions, and the physical demands of walking in an arid, high-altitude desert environment. The trek usually lasts 10 to 14 days, with walking times averaging 5 to 7 hours daily.

With Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, your trek is backed by a team of knowledgeable guides trained in altitude acclimatization and first aid, ensuring you are supported every step of the way. We provide well-organized logistics, including reliable porters and high-quality camping or lodge accommodations depending on your preference. Whether you are an experienced trekker or a fit beginner eager to explore one of Nepal’s most fascinating regions, our team customizes the journey to match your fitness level and trekking goals.
