Highlights

Overview

The Everest Three Pass Trek is one of the most thrilling and comprehensive trekking adventures in the Khumbu region, designed for trekkers seeking a true challenge and a complete Himalayan experience. Unlike the classic Everest Base Camp route, this trek crosses three high-altitude passes—Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,340m)—each offering spectacular panoramas of towering peaks, glacial valleys, and vast alpine landscapes. This circuit-style trek links the four major valleys of the Everest region: Imja, Khumbu, Gokyo, and Thame, allowing trekkers to experience the full scope of the high Himalayas.

The journey begins in Lukla and follows the traditional Everest Base Camp trail through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche, before diverging onto less-traveled paths that lead over rugged passes and into secluded valleys. Along the way, trekkers will visit Everest Base Camp, climb to Kala Patthar, admire the turquoise lakes of Gokyo, and ascend Gokyo Ri for sweeping views of Everest, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. The Everest Three Pass Trek is more than a trek—it's an expedition into the raw, unfiltered heart of the Himalayas.

Best Time for Everest Three Pass Trek
Due to its high elevation and challenging nature, the best time to do the Everest Three Pass Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. In spring, the weather is relatively mild and the landscape is dotted with colorful rhododendron blooms. The skies are generally clear, providing incredible visibility of the mountains and making it an ideal time for photography and peak viewing.

Autumn is equally favorable, with crisp, stable weather and crystal-clear skies following the monsoon rains. The temperatures are cool but manageable, and the trails are dry and safe for high-altitude crossings. Winter (December to February) brings heavy snowfall and extremely cold temperatures, often making the high passes impassable. The monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to poor trail conditions, reduced visibility, and the increased risk of landslides. For the best experience and safest passage through the three high passes, spring and autumn are highly recommended.

Major Highlights of Everest Three Pass Trek
The Everest Three Pass Trek is packed with extraordinary highlights that go far beyond the standard EBC route. The first pass, Kongma La, offers a remote and rugged trail from Dingboche to Lobuche, with unmatched views of Makalu and the Khumbu Glacier. From there, trekkers visit Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, providing the closest and most dramatic view of Mount Everest and surrounding giants like Nuptse and Lhotse.

Next is the Cho La Pass, a challenging but scenic route that leads into the breathtaking Gokyo Valley, home to a chain of glacial lakes and the viewpoint of Gokyo Ri (5,360m). This ridge presents some of the finest panoramic views in the Himalayas, including a rare angle of Everest and Cho Oyu. The final crossing of Renjo La Pass connects to the tranquil Thame Valley, a less-touristed area rich in Sherpa culture and heritage. Each pass offers its own distinct landscape and rewards, making this trek an unparalleled combination of adventure, scenery, and cultural exploration.
