Overview

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking is one of the most popular and scenic short treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Ideal for both beginner and experienced trekkers, this journey offers a spectacular blend of nature, culture, and panoramic mountain views without the need for high-altitude trekking. Starting from the picturesque village of Ghandruk, the trail takes you through lush rhododendron forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional Gurung and Magar settlements.

Organized by Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, this trek is more than just a walk in the mountains. It's a cultural immersion that allows you to connect with the warm-hearted locals, observe their traditional lifestyles, and witness firsthand the breathtaking beauty of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Poon Hill (3,210 meters) is the ultimate highlight, offering one of the best sunrise views in Nepal, where the golden morning light paints the peaks with stunning hues. This trek is a perfect introduction to the Himalayas, combining comfort, adventure, and authentic experiences.

Best Time for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking
The best time to embark on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, mild temperatures, and the best visibility of the snow-capped mountains. In spring, the forests along the trail are in full bloom, especially with vibrant rhododendron flowers, creating a magical and colorful path to walk through.

Autumn is equally rewarding, with stable weather, clear mountain views, and festive local culture. During these months, you can enjoy the ideal trekking conditions without the extreme cold of winter or the slippery trails of the monsoon season. Although winter (December to February) is also possible for the trek, it comes with chilly mornings and occasional snow, making it suitable only for those prepared for colder conditions. At Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, we provide expert guidance to choose the best time according to your preferences, ensuring a safe and memorable trekking experience.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking Difficulty
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is considered a moderate trek, making it accessible to people of most age groups and fitness levels. The daily walking hours range from 4 to 6 hours, with well-maintained trails that do not reach extremely high altitudes. The highest point of the trek is Poon Hill at 3,210 meters, which significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness compared to other high-altitude treks in Nepal.

Despite its moderate difficulty, the trail includes some steep uphill climbs, particularly the stone steps from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri, which require a bit of stamina and determination. However, with a steady pace, proper acclimatization, and guidance from Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, even first-time trekkers can complete the trek comfortably. Our guides ensure regular breaks, hydration, and support along the way, making your adventure both challenging and enjoyable.

Trip Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of the city. After settling in, you'll have a short briefing about the trek and some time to explore the vibrant streets of Thamel or simply rest after your journey. The evening is yours to enjoy a welcome dinner and soak in the cultural ambiance of the capital city.

After breakfast, we begin our journey with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Nepal’s picturesque lake city nestled at the base of the Annapurna range. The drive takes approximately 6–7 hours and offers stunning views of terraced hillsides, rivers, and distant Himalayan peaks. Upon arrival in Pokhara, we check into our hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening near Phewa Lake, preparing for the trek ahead.

We start the day with a short drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, the trailhead for our trek. From Nayapul, we begin our trek walking through lush forests, small villages, and riverside paths. The trail ascends gradually to Tikhedhunga and then steeply climbs a stone staircase to reach the village of Ulleri. The ascent is demanding but rewards us with views of beautiful hills and traditional mountain life. Overnight in Ulleri.

Today’s trek takes us deeper into the Annapurna region as we climb through dense rhododendron forests and enjoy occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks. The trail gradually ascends as we reach the charming village of Ghorepani, perched on a ridge and surrounded by majestic mountains. At an elevation of around 2,874 meters, Ghorepani offers a cool, refreshing atmosphere and a spectacular sunset view over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. We rest here for the night in anticipation of the following day's highlight.

Before dawn, we hike up to Poon Hill (3,210m) to witness one of Nepal’s most iconic sunrise views. As the sun rises over the Himalayas, the sky lights up with golden hues and reveals panoramic views of Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and many other peaks. After soaking in the scenery and capturing unforgettable photos, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast, then begin our trek to the Gurung village of Ghandruk via Deurali and Tadapani. Ghandruk offers traditional architecture, cultural heritage, and more incredible mountain views. Overnight in Ghandruk.

After breakfast, we begin the final leg of our trek, descending through beautiful terraced fields and forests toward Nayapul. This easier downhill walk allows us to reflect on the amazing journey and enjoy the changing scenery. Upon reaching Nayapul, our vehicle will be waiting to drive us back to Pokhara. Once in Pokhara, you’ll have time to rest or explore the lakeside markets, cafés, or even take a boat ride on Phewa Lake. Overnight in Pokhara.

We bid farewell to Pokhara and take the drive back to Kathmandu. This scenic return journey offers a last look at the rural landscapes and river valleys that characterize the region. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for your final evening in Nepal. You may wish to shop for souvenirs or enjoy a farewell dinner with your trekking team at one of the city’s traditional restaurants.

After breakfast, a representative from Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions will escort you to the airport for your departure flight. As you leave Nepal, you carry with you cherished memories of majestic mountains, warm hospitality, and an unforgettable adventure on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.

The highlight of the trek is the early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210 meters) to witness a panoramic sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After exploring the traditional Gurung village of Ghandruk, trekkers descend to Nayapul or Kimche, where a vehicle transfer returns them to Pokhara.

During the trek, trekkers stay in local teahouses or lodges that provide basic but comfortable accommodations with twin-sharing rooms and common bathrooms. These teahouses also offer a wide range of meals, including traditional Nepali dal bhat, pasta, soup, momos, fried rice, and seasonal vegetables. Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions ensures clean and friendly accommodations and takes care of all meal arrangements, typically offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner as part of the trekking package.

The best seasons for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Winter treks (December to February) are also possible, though temperatures can be cold, especially in the mornings and evenings. Monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to heavy rain, slippery trails, and limited mountain visibility.

While it is possible to trek independently, Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions highly recommends hiring a professional guide, especially for those new to trekking in Nepal. A local guide not only enhances safety and navigation but also provides deeper insights into the local culture, flora, and fauna. Our guides are licensed, experienced, and fluent in English, ensuring a more enriching and secure trekking experience. We also provide optional porters to carry your luggage, allowing you to enjoy the trek with ease.

Yes, all necessary permits are included in our trekking package. For the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, you will need two main permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions handles the permit process on your behalf before the trek begins, so you don’t need to worry about paperwork.

Packing wisely is essential. Trekkers should bring comfortable hiking boots, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, trekking pants, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a headlamp, and basic toiletries. A sleeping bag is also recommended, though blankets are usually provided in the teahouses. Hidden Path Treks provides a detailed packing list upon booking and can also assist in gear rental if needed.
