Overview

The Mardi Himal Trek is one of Nepal’s most breathtaking and less-traveled trekking routes in the Annapurna region. Offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, mountain scenery, and peaceful trails, this trek is ideal for those seeking a quieter, off-the-beaten-path Himalayan experience. Unlike the more crowded routes, Mardi Himal presents unspoiled landscapes and close-up views of some of the highest peaks, including Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.

With Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, the Mardi Himal Trek begins with a short drive from Pokhara to Kande or Phedi. From there, the trail winds through charming villages, alpine forests, and along ridgelines that offer panoramic views of the Annapurna range. As you gain elevation, you’ll pass through lush rhododendron forests and open highlands before reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp at approximately 4,500 meters. This hidden gem provides some of the closest and most dramatic views of Machapuchare, a sacred and unclimbed peak in Nepal. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or adventure seeker, this trek offers an unforgettable Himalayan experience.

Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek
The ideal seasons for trekking the Mardi Himal route are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the skies are usually clear, temperatures are moderate, and the mountain views are at their most stunning. Spring is especially beautiful with rhododendrons blooming across the hillsides, creating vibrant colors that contrast with the snow-covered peaks.

Autumn offers post-monsoon clarity, making it one of the best times for photography and uninterrupted mountain viewing. The temperatures are also comfortable for trekking during the day, with cool nights at higher altitudes. While it is possible to trek in winter (December to February), expect colder conditions and potential snowfall, especially above Forest Camp. At Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions, we help our clients plan around the best weather windows, ensuring safety and an exceptional trekking experience.

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty
The Mardi Himal Trek is considered a moderate trek, suitable for trekkers with a basic level of fitness and determination. It doesn’t require any prior high-altitude trekking experience, making it a great introduction to Himalayan trekking. However, the trail does involve steep ascents and descents, especially as you approach High Camp and Base Camp. Altitude acclimatization is crucial, even though the route is shorter than many others in the region.

With daily hikes averaging 4 to 6 hours, the journey allows enough time for rest, acclimatization, and enjoying the surroundings. The maximum elevation reaches just over 4,500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp, where the thin air and cooler temperatures are more noticeable. Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions provides experienced guides, porters, and proper acclimatization schedules to ensure that even first-time trekkers feel confident and supported throughout the journey.

Major Places for Mardi Himal Trek
The trek begins in Kande or Phedi, gradually moving through scenic villages like Australian Camp and Pothana, offering early glimpses of the Himalayan range. The trail continues through serene forests to Forest Camp and then to Low Camp, where the views become increasingly dramatic. At High Camp, trekkers are rewarded with magnificent panoramas and a front-row seat to Machapuchare, Annapurna South, and the surrounding peaks.

The final push to Mardi Himal Base Camp is the highlight of the trek, often done early in the morning to catch the sunrise over the mountains. Along the way, trekkers encounter a variety of flora and fauna, yaks grazing on alpine meadows, and occasional sightings of Himalayan wildlife. The return journey typically retraces the route or can be varied to descend via Siding Village, offering a cultural contrast and a chance to experience traditional Nepali rural life. Every stop on this trail offers something unique, making it one of the most rewarding short treks in Nepal.

Trip Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. After checking in, you’ll have time to relax and explore the vibrant streets of Thamel, the city's popular tourist district. In the evening, there will be a short briefing about the trek, followed by a welcome dinner featuring authentic Nepali cuisine.

After an early breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive to Pokhara, Nepal’s lake city nestled beside the serene Phewa Lake and the backdrop of the Annapurna range. The journey by tourist bus or private vehicle winds through rolling hills, terraced farms, and traditional villages. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you’ll check into your hotel and have time to stroll along the lakeside, enjoying views of Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain).

Today begins with a short drive from Pokhara to Kande, the starting point of our trek. From here, we ascend through stone-paved steps to reach the picturesque Australian Camp, offering the first panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After a short rest, we continue through lush rhododendron forests and tranquil trails until we reach Forest Camp, a peaceful resting point surrounded by dense woodland.

As we ascend higher, the forest gradually thins out and the views open up dramatically. Today’s trail passes through Badal Danda, a ridge known for its sweeping Himalayan vistas and mist-covered cliffs. Continuing along a scenic ridgeline, we reach High Camp, perched above the tree line. Here, the towering peaks of Machapuchare and Mardi Himal feel tantalizingly close, and the sunset over the mountains is unforgettable.

We rise early for the highlight of the trek — the hike to Mardi Himal View Point. The trail is steep but rewarding, with mesmerizing views of Mardi Himal, Annapurna I, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare. After soaking in the panoramic views and capturing photos at the ridge, we descend back to High Camp for breakfast and then continue down to Low Camp for a well-earned rest in the tranquil forested area.

The final trekking day begins with a gradual descent through lush forest trails to the village of Sidding. This part of the journey offers a quieter, off-the-beaten-path experience and a closer glimpse into rural mountain life. From Sidding, we take a scenic drive back to Pokhara, where you can unwind and celebrate your successful trek beside the peaceful lake.

After breakfast in Pokhara, we drive back to Kathmandu, retracing our route through hills and river valleys. Once in the capital, you’ll have time for last-minute shopping, visiting heritage sites, or simply relaxing at the hotel. In the evening, Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions may host a farewell dinner to commemorate your journey.

Your adventure with Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions concludes today. Depending on your flight time, a representative will transfer you to the airport for your onward journey. Frequently Asked Questions

The Mardi Himal Trek is a hidden gem in the Annapurna region of Nepal, perfect for those seeking a less-crowded route with equally spectacular Himalayan scenery. This short and moderate trek offers incredible views of Machapuchare (Fishtail), Mardi Himal, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli, as well as an authentic cultural experience through traditional villages. Unlike the more commercial routes, the Mardi Himal trail winds through peaceful forests, open ridgelines, and remote high camps, offering solitude and breathtaking panoramas. Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions recommends this trek for adventure lovers who prefer off-the-beaten-path exploration with a personal touch.

The Mardi Himal Trek typically takes 5 to 7 days, depending on your pace and starting point. The standard itinerary begins from Kande or Phedi, gradually ascending through Australian Camp, Forest Camp, Low Camp, High Camp, and finally to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 meters). After reaching the base camp, trekkers usually descend via Siding village or Landruk, completing a scenic loop. The route offers a combination of forest trails, ridge walks, and high-altitude vistas, making each day varied and exciting. Hidden Path Treks designs flexible itineraries to match your fitness level and travel schedule.

Accommodations on the Mardi Himal Trek are mainly in locally-run teahouses and lodges. While simpler than those on more developed trails, the teahouses offer basic comforts including beds with blankets, shared toilets, and hearty meals. You’ll find typical trekking meals such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, fried rice, pasta, pancakes, and eggs. Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions ensures clean and welcoming lodging and includes three meals a day in the trekking package. Our guides also help communicate with locals and manage your dietary preferences or needs.

The ideal seasons for the Mardi Himal Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the skies are generally clear, temperatures are pleasant, and the mountain views are exceptional. Spring is especially beautiful, with rhododendron forests in full bloom. Trekking in winter (December to February) is also possible for those who enjoy snow-covered landscapes, though it can be very cold and some lodges may be closed at higher altitudes. Monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to rain, leeches, and poor trail conditions.

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderate and does not require technical climbing experience. The highest point is Mardi Himal Base Camp at approximately 4,500 meters (14,764 ft). While the elevation is significant, the gradual ascent helps with acclimatization. Daily walking time ranges from 4 to 6 hours, and the trails involve some steep sections, especially around High Camp. Trekkers should have a moderate fitness level and be prepared for changing weather. Hidden Path Treks ensures proper pacing and acclimatization to make the experience safe and enjoyable.

Yes, two permits are required: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits help fund conservation efforts and ensure your safety on the trail. Hidden Path Treks & Expeditions takes care of all necessary permits as part of your trekking package, so you don’t need to worry about paperwork or queues.

Although independent trekking is possible, hiring a licensed guide from Hidden Path Treks greatly enhances your safety, enjoyment, and cultural understanding. Our guides are experienced, English-speaking, and trained in first aid and high-altitude awareness. A porter is also available to carry your bag (typically up to 15kg), allowing you to walk freely and enjoy the trail. For Mardi Himal, a guide and porter are strongly recommended, especially due to the less-marked trails in certain sections.

Essential items include: trekking boots, warm layers, windproof and waterproof jacket, thermal wear, gloves and hat, daypack, water bottles or hydration system, sunscreen, sunglasses, headlamp, and personal medications. A sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures is also advisable. Hidden Path Treks provides a full pre-trek packing checklist and can assist with gear rental in Pokhara if needed.
